Based on an article in the LA Times, CVS will be changing up their ECB system in the near future.
The article says that CVS wants the customer to use their rewards easier. They feel as though its difficult for customers to redeem them because of the way they are printed- on the bottom of the receipt.
Some of the key points in the article:
- Put the ECB rewards on the CVS’ computers or on the Extra Care Card.
- CVS awarded nearly $2 BILLION in ECBs last year and only a fraction were redeemed.
- They don’t want customers to have to schlep long receipts to redeem their ECBs.
- Currently, if you have $10 in ECBs and make a $5 purchase, the rest is forfeited.
- Currently, they have an expiration of 60 days, you must use them or lose them.
As much as I like to get my list together and have everything in hand, I think that this new way could be a good thing. I know sometimes my 3 year old gets a hold of my receipt and I never see it again. Those are the times when I wish that I could just hop on the computer and print off a new one. But with this new system, I wouldn’t even have to do that- it would be right on my card!
Are they considering not having expiration dates on them? Maybe they are going to place your rewards on your card and just keep them there until you use them. I personally think that could be a plus. If there are no deals one or two weeks, I hold onto my ECBs until there is a deal, so no expiration would work in my favor.
They mentioned that we forfeit some of our ECBs if our total doesn’t meet the ECB used. Are they going to change this I wonder? It might benefit the customer if all the earned ECBs were just placed on our card and held there until we use them, kinda like an ECB “bank”. I wonder if when we make a purchase if just the right amount of ECBs will come off instead of losing any. That could be a plus.
There’s obviously a lot that we don’t know about how they are going to change things. However, it does look as though they are trying to make things easier.
What do you think? I would LOVE to hear your opinion- leave me a comment.
New to CVS shopping? You can read about the current ECB system HERE.

sure wish that Walgreen’s would get with the program! CVS shopping also sounds so much easier!
Yes, Trish- I’m with you. I do find CVS shopping to be a little easier. You can use ECBs on the same deal to get more ECBs without having to jump through hoops.
I’ve always thought CVS was a lot easier system to use anyway (compared to Walgreens)! If they want to make it even easier, all the better!
My CVS takes expired ECB. They just put them in manually. I asked the manager recently if they were going to change that, and she said no. They take all of the coupons that print on your receipt regardless of expiration, but home-mailer coupons and their own tear-pad coupons that they occasionally have (like the $5/2 Duracell) they do not accept if they are expired. I have been using receipt-printed coupons from 2007 with no problems. In fact, the manager of my CVS is the one who told me not to throw them out because they accept them expired, which is why I still have 2007 coupons, lol. She told me ALL CVS stores were supposed to do this. I hope the changes they are planning don’t mess that up.
Stephanie, you are very lucky if your store accepts expired ECBs. I decided to finally ask my CVS the other day if they take them expired and I got a big no. I’m thinking that when they start to phase out the old system they will have to honor all of their paper ECBs until they are gone and then just transition to the new system. And I’m hoping that the ECBs won’t expire on your card. We’ll see!
